Aim:
“To design the Environmental Activity boxes for young adults in the age group of 13-18 that will tour with "Swiss it" bus through different cities.”
About Swiss it on Wheels

The "Swiss it!" bus which is launched by the Official Swiss Network will tour (virtually and physically) through about 28 cities in India with the aim to encourage young adults in the age group of 13-18 years to engage in the topics of sustainability, air pollution, and water pollution as well as waste segregation and recycling through workshops, activities, films and more.

Introduction to the project

In the first meeting, we were introduced to all members involved in the project from the Zurich institutes side, and from the Treecraze foundation side, it was more of setting up a communication channel between the organization.

After the introduction, we were told about the needs of the Embassy, and the  Treecraze foundation introduced to the ideas which they had in mind. There will be 3 Environmental Activity boxes: Water box, Waste box, and Air box each box will contain 4 activities.

Research

The research started with the problem of waste itself and then asking the question "what could be considered as waste in the Indian household?".

After the introduction, we were told about the needs of the Embassy, and the  Treecraze foundation introduced to the ideas which they had in mind. There will be 3 Environmental Activity boxes: Water box, Waste box, and Air box each box will contain 4 activities.

Ideation for activity

In parallel, I was also ideating about the upcycling activity which I got. We were giving our input on other activities.

Finalising the activity

After having rounds of ideation and we finalized the activities. The waste upcycling activity will have "Upcycle your old t-shirt" and "Upcycle an old cardboard box" as two parts of the activity.
Before finalizing we had kept in mind that:
1. The material should be easy to find.
2. It shouldn't happen that rather than reusing the waste they buy new material just for the activity.

In the first draft of the box, we came to the conclusion that each activity will have one level in the whole box. So, the whole set of the waste box will have 4 levels each level containing one activity.

The first draft of the box

The design of the trolley is to move the whole set of the box. The trolley has a swiss cross cut to its base plate, representing the theme "Swiss it on Wheels".
Every trolley is painted to represent the color of the box.

Then we did rough prototyping to check the ergonomics and the assembling of the box and also to check if all activities could fit in the box.

Redesigned box

In the final design of the box, as the size of the activity content was level compared to the decided size of the box, so we merged some of the 2 activities into one level and reduce the size of the box to reduce the wastage of materials.

Box Dimensions

We reduced the size of the box, to match the activity size and not to waste the material.
Some of the two activities were put in one box because some activities did not require such huge space.
For example, the Memory game just requires cards so giving it a whole box is just wasting the space and material, as well as increasing the whole cost.

Production

The production of the box took place in three stages first being the manufacturing of the box pieces, then screen printing, and final assembly.
